SURROUNDINGS

Beside its proximity to Rome, the resort is marvellously located, in a territory extremely rich of natural beauty and history.

Sutri

Originally Sutri was an Etruscan fortress. It was conquered by the Roman consul Furius  Camillus, in the fourth century B.C. and became a Roman town, just outside of Rome.
Some historians report that Sutri was the place where, for centuries, the Roman legions, returning home from their war campaigns had to stop and remain before getting permission by the senators to enter Rome.
Who knows? … In any case,  a beautiful Roman amphitheatre is still there!
After the fall of the Roman Empire, this was the place where the Longobard  king, Liutprandus  made his famous donation (726 A.C.), thus starting the temporal power of the popes.
A well known legend, still to be historically proven, tells that Sutri was the place from where Charlemagne left, in the year 800 A.C., to start his adventure of building the Holy Roman Empire.
In the Middle Ages, Sutri became the battle field for several contenders to the pope’s throne (Sutri council, 1046) and, later on, a place of refuge for Popes during their struggles against Emperors.
Today it is a beautiful little town, which preserves its historical sites and its nature very well..

Trevignano Romano

This is the nearest village, on the shore of Bracciano lake.
Inhabited since the time of pile-dwellings, it became a wealthy Etruscan village, then a Roman village  and then, during the period of the temporal power,  it became the possession of one of the most powerful noble roman families.
The lake offers clean (potable water reservoir of Rome), deep, warm waters, beaches and facilities for sailing. Motor boating is forbidden, in order to maintain high standards of water purity.

Caprarola

A former possession of one of the most powerful Roman families of that time, the Farnese family, Caprarola is where one of the most beautiful cardinal palaces ever built is situated.  (Many cardinals who belonged to Farnese family were always competing for the papacy with cardinals of other families).
A visit will show you its magnificence…. and the tricks used to enjoy a rich and complete human life, keeping up appearances…..

Viterbo

Two thousand years of history in this town and, above all, memories and medieval atmosphere.
Walls, palaces, churches, all wonderfully preserved, will take you back into the struggle between the Emperor’s and the Pope’s supporters and into the time when popes returned from Avignon and elected Viterbo as their headquarters, in order to avoid all the dangers of medieval Rome….
